If you are buying a Windows licence in South Africa, the first question is usually whether Pro is worth the difference over Home. The honest answer is that most home users do not need Pro, and the people who do usually know exactly why. Here is what actually separates them.
What Pro adds
BitLocker drive encryption. This is the big one. BitLocker encrypts your whole drive, so if your laptop is stolen the thief gets a brick rather than your files. Home does not include it. If you carry a laptop that has client data, financial records or anything you would not want read, this alone justifies Pro.
Remote Desktop host. Both editions can connect to another machine. Only Pro can be the machine you connect to. If you want to reach your work PC from home, the work PC needs Pro.
Hyper-V. Built-in virtual machines, so you can run a second operating system in a window. Useful for developers and for testing software safely.
Group Policy Editor. Fine-grained control over how Windows behaves. Mostly relevant if you are managing machines for other people.
Domain join and Azure AD. Required if the machine needs to join a company network. If your IT department has asked for Pro, this is usually why.
Windows Sandbox. A disposable, isolated desktop for opening files you do not trust. It vanishes when you close it.
A higher RAM ceiling. Home caps at 128GB, Pro goes to 2TB. Almost nobody hits this, but it exists.
What is identical
Performance is the same. Gaming is the same. Security updates are the same. The interface is the same. Pro is not a faster Windows, and anyone who tells you it is has something to sell.
So which should you buy?
Buy Home if the machine is for browsing, email, schoolwork, streaming and gaming, and it mostly stays in the house.
Buy Pro if you work off a laptop that leaves the house, if you need to remote in to it, if your employer requires domain join, or if you run virtual machines.
If you are undecided and the machine holds anything sensitive, BitLocker is usually the deciding factor. Encryption you have is worth more than encryption you meant to add later.
Upgrading later
You are not locked in. A Home machine can be upgraded to Pro afterwards without reinstalling Windows or losing files, though you will pay the difference rather than the discounted gap. If you already know you need Pro, buying it up front is cheaper.
